　　In many countries it has long been the tradition to hold an annual tree or forest festival. The origin of such celebrations dates back to antiquity and is in the dawn of religious feeling and awe for what trees represented. However, Arbor Day, as it is commonly known today, is of American origin and evolved from conditions peculiar to the at Plains. It was first observed in Nebraska in 1872.

　　The idea, conceived by J.S. Morton, then a member of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, was one of forest conservation. It was a move to promote replanting, following deforestation, and to plant up treeless areas. The idea has spread widely to other lands where it is variously celebrated as the 'Festival of Trees', 'ening Week' of Japan, 'The New Year's Days of Trees' in Israel, 'The Tree-loving Week' of Korea, 'The Reforestation Week' of Yugoslavia, 'The Students' Afforestation Day' of Iceland and 'The National Festival of Tree Planting' in India. Arbor Day in its various forms is now recognised in more than fifty countries.

　　1、时态误用

　　不少同学写作时过于匆忙，还没弄清文章的主体时态就下笔，导致时态误用，造成失分。面对不同的作文题材，我们应运用合适的时态。

　　例如，一般现在时多用于描述事物的特性、用途或介绍某地的地理位置，人口等;一般过去时则多用于介绍人物生平经历、已经开展的调查、报告等;而一般将来时多用于尚未发生但准备开展的比赛或通知等。

　　2、缺乏“词汇美”

　　高级词汇使用恰当能把作文提升一个档次。作文中的高级词汇主要体现在动词和形容词的运用。

　　同学在平日可以对词义相近的单词进行归纳总结，例如， complete，fulfill，accomplish，achieve，四者都代表“完成”意思。写作文时，只需把简单词汇换成高级词汇就能让作文华丽“大变身”。

　　3、丢失“衔接美”

　　我们一般会在句首或句中增添一些连接词，使得上下文通顺连贯。当我们说起连接词时，相信大部分同学首先想到but，because，so这类简单连词。但在改卷过程中，老师更欣赏使用如on the contrary ，as the result of，owing to的连接短语。

　　其实这类连词或短语大家都背过不少，可是写作文时总忘记学以致用，把学过的连接词都忘记得一干二净。

　　4、忘记“句式美”

　　有的同学缺乏句型积累，所以通篇运用简单陈述句，句式平淡无味，很难吸引老师眼球。反之，如果同学们能适当运用复合句、强调句型、非谓语动词，或with的'复合结构。文章的句式就会多变，内容描述会生动起来，分数也随之提高。

　　例如：This book was so interesting that I read it again and again.

　　这本书是如此的有趣，以致我读了一遍又一遍。

　　这是简单的so…that句型的句子，如果把句型换成：

　　What is intelligence， anyway？ When I was in the army I received a kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and， against a normal of 100， scored 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that and for two hours they made a nig fuss over me. （It didn't mean anything. The next day I was still a buck private with KP as my highest duty.）

　　All my life I've been registering scores like that， so that I have the complacent feeling that I'm highly intelligent， and I expect other people to think so， too. Actually， though， don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by the people who make up the intelligence tests - people with intellectual bents similar to mine？

　　For instance， I had an auto-repair man once， who， on these intelligence tests， could not possibly have scored more than 80， by my estimate. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was. Yet， when anything went wrong with my car I hastened to him with it， watched him anxiously as he explored its vitals， and listened to his pronouncements as though they were divine oracles - and he always fixed my car.

　　Well， then， suppose my auto-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test. Or suppose a carpenter did， or a farmer， or， indeed， almost anyone but an academician. By every one of those tests， I'd prove myself a moron. And I'd be a moron， too. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard， working with my hands， I would do poorly. My intelligence， then， is not absolute. Its worth is determined by the society I live in. Its numerical evaluation is determined by a small subsection of that society which has managed to foist itself on the rest of us as an arbiter of such matters.

　　Consider my auto-repair man， again. He had a habit of telling me jokes whenever he saw me. One time he raised his head from under the automobile hood to say： "Doc， a deaf-and-dumb guy went into a hardware store to ask for some nails. He put two fingers together on the counter and made hammering motions with the other hand. The clerk brought him a hammer. He shook his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk brought him nails. He picked out the sizes he wanted， and left. Well， doc， the next guy who came in was a blind man. He wanted scissors. How do you suppose he asked for them？"

　　I lifted my right hand and made scissoring motions with my first two fingers. Whereupon my auto-repair man laughed heartily and said， "Why， you dumb fool， he used his voice and asked for them." Then he said， smugly， "I've been trying that on all my customers today." "Did you catch many？" I asked. "Quite a few，" he said， "but I knew for sure I'd catch you." "Why is that？" I asked. "Because you're so goddamned educated， doc， I know you couldn't be very smart."

　　In recent years, getting a certificate has become a new craze among college students. Just randomly ask a student on campus what he or she is busy doing; quite possibly, you may get the answer that he or she is preparing for a certificate of some kind. Why does this craze appear?

　　There are mainly two reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the employment pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a lot more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job market. How can one make himself more competitive? More certificates at hand, maybe. Second, diploma and certificates are still important standards by which many employers measure a person’s ability. In order to increase the qualifications for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another.

　　From my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability. Being crazy in getting certifications blindly is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value.

　　近年来，获得证书已成为大学生的新热潮。随便问一个学生在校园里他或她正忙什么；很可能你得到的答案是他或她在为某种形式的证书做准备。为什么会出现这种热潮？

　　从我的角度来看，谈到证书我们应当保持理智，因为证书不一定证明自己的能力。盲目疯狂获得认证只不过是浪费时间。最后，我们应着重于提高我们的能力，而不是获取没有实用价值的证书。

　　There is a heated debate over the role of lectures and discussions in the classroom. Some people believe that lectures can help students learn more quickly. In contrast, others hold that discussions can stimulate students to learn by themselves.

In their view, by giving lectures teachers help students master the knowledge they've accumulated over years of study and research. However, others think that in a discussion, the teacher usually guides the students instead of dominating them. They argue that to get involved in a discussion, students have to develop their ability to analyze problems independently.

　　In my opinion, I stand on the side of neither idea. First of all, either method has its disadvantages. Furthermore, each student has his or her preference. Thirdly, lectures are preferable to discussions in the teaching of science subjects, and on the contrary, discussions are preferable to lectures in studying the humanities. Therefore, we should adopt different teaching methods according to different subjects.
